Islam has boundaries and outer limits which are clearly defined in the Qur'an and the Prophetic traditions. A Muslim can leave Islam through certain beliefs, statements and deeds which exceed those boundaries, clash with the foundations of Islam, invalidate it, and can never be reconciled with it.

In this treatise, Shaykh al-Islām Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Wahhāb (raḥimahullāh) mentions ten nullifiers that are agreed upon by the scholars of the Muslims — among them: associating partners (shirk) with Allah, taking intermediaries with Allah for the realisation of needs, hating anything brought by the Messenger ﷺ, mockery of the religion, magic and witchcraft, supporting the disbelievers against the Muslims, and turning away from the religion of Allah without learning it or implementing it.
