al-Radd 'ala al-Zanadiqa wal-Jahmiyyah — الرد على الزنادقة والجهمية فيما شكت فيه من متشابه القرآن وتأولته على غير تأويله — Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal
One of the most important early works in defense of the Aqeedah of Ahl al-Sunnah wal-Jama'ah, authored by Imam Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Hanbal (d. 241 AH) — the Imam of the Sunnah in his era. According to a number of scholars, including his son Salih, Abu Ya'la al-Hanbali, Ibn Taymiyyah, and Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyyah, Imam Ahmad wrote this treatise while imprisoned during the well-known trial (Mihnah) over the createdness of the Quran.
The book is divided into two main parts. The first addresses the heretics (Zanadiqa) who claimed the Quran contained contradictions by pitting its verses against one another. The second is a refutation of the Jahmiyyah and their distortions of Aqeedah — including their denial of Allah's Attributes, their claim that the Quran is created, and their rejection of the believers seeing Allah in the Hereafter. Imam Ahmad dismantles each argument using evidences from the Quran, the Sunnah, and rational proofs, leaving no room for doubt.
